The explorer said completion of a secondary phase of drilling at the site confirmed shallow coal seams suitable for open cast mine development.
The most recent drilling results are expected to increase the confidence of levels of the resource and to outline an initial target of 200-300 million tonnes of the overall inferred resource.
“This combined shallow resource of 6.9Bt at Takatokwane and the amenability of the deposit to be upgraded to export quality thermal coal places Nimrodel as the leading coal asset holder in the emerging Botswana coal industry,” Nimrodel managing director Allan Mulligan said.
Basic coal quality tests carried out in Johannesburg by Advanced Coal Technology have indicated coal at the site can be upgraded to feedstock quality usable by most coal-fired power stations in southern Africa and Asia.
Continued exploration at Takatodwane will focus on areas targeted to be the most amenable to form the technical basis of a start-up mining operation.
The widest seam of the five-seam project has recorded at depths of 66m and 70m with thicknesses of 14m and 19m, respectively.
