The male sleeve formed within the washer features an extremely tightly toleranced gap sleeve inside diameter and shaft outside diameter, forming a toleranced gap seal, similar in principle to the design of a steel shielded ball bearing. This initial barrier reinforces and enhances Edwin Lowe's already well established cartridge sealing arrangement, according to the company.
The sleeve also features Edwin Lowe’s existing three-lip shaft contact seal constructed from flame retardant polyurethane. The seal also incorporates grease within the lip barriers and main cavity, providing additional sealant/lubrication.
Edwin Lowe says the three-lip seal design has received approval in Australia and Britain for use in underground mines.
