Coal minds to meet in Pittsburgh

ORGANIZERS are preparing to welcome hundreds to this week’s annual Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration/Pittsburgh Coal Mining Institute of America meeting in Pennsylvania.

This year’s conference – on Thursday and Friday at the Hilton Garden Inn in Southpointe – will feature technical sessions on sustainable development, engineering projects, gas issues and new technologies.

Some of the presentations on the itinerary include:

  • Optimizing Continuous Miner Cut Sequences for Improved Productivity and Worker Health and Safety – Dr Joseph Hirschi, Illinois Clean Coal Institute
  • Enlow Fork Mine – Slope and Overland Conveyor Project – Matthew Powell, Consol Energy
  • Design and Development of a New Generation Mine-Mouth Coal Fired Power Plant – James Laurita Jr, MEPCO
  • Smartzone Proximity Detection: Building a More Intelligent System – Brian Thompson, Joy Global

Thursday’s keynote address is “Into the Dark: The Development of a New and Unique Mine Rescue Tool” by Rick McAllister, of Alpha Natural Resources, who will visit with Ginny, the industry’s first canine rescue team member.

Friday’s keynote will be “Dirty Coal, Clean Coal and the Role of Science: Myths, Realities and the Way Ahead” by Dr Michael Karmis, Virginia Tech Stonie Barker professor and Virginia Center for Coal and Energy Research director.

Personal development hours will be available for attendees, as will a small group of exhibiting vendors.
