According to official state media outlet Xinhua, the rescuers escaped through a newly dug tunnel after being trapped in the Anlilai coal mine in China’s southwest Guizhou province.

The collapse which trapped the rescuers followed less than 24 hours after an initial cave-in pinned five miners underground the facility on Wednesday.

As of press time, continued rescue attempts have not yet been able to reach the miners.

An investigation into the cause of the collapses is ongoing.
