CSX officials told the Associated Press that the derailment of six cars from a 75-car train with four locomotives occurred at about 2pm on Thursday in Raleigh, near Beckley and that no injuries resulted from the accident.
A railroad spokesman could not be reached on Friday by ILN regarding the origin and destination of the train or to provide further details.
Local newspaper the Register-Herald said four local roads had been impacted by the derailment and repair to one track was needed.
Crews cleaned up the coal that spilled into nearby Piney Creek.
CSX spokesperson Gary Sease told the paper it could be weeks before the accident’s cause was determined.
“We don’t have a clear estimate right now on when that track will be back in service,” Sease said, adding that “quite a bit of coal” was lost.
“We could reroute but don’t think that’s necessary. We think the track is going to be repaired in time to be able to resume that service.”
CSX’s network encompasses about 21,000 route miles in 23 US states, the District of Columbia and Ontario and Quebec, Canada.
