EMS certification has been awarded to Pinnacle Mining as well as Cliffs Logan County Coal.
Additionally, the Oak Grove Resources complex near the Alabama capital of Birmingham has been endorsed for ISO 14001.
The internationally recognized certification indicates a standard of performance has been met for the environmental management systems.
Cliffs indicated that having the standard would help it comply with good environmental practices, the conservation of input materials and energy, obtaining necessary permits and authorizations and being socially responsible.
“Environmental stewardship is a Cliffs core value and this achievement is an illustration of our commitment to responsible, safe and sustainable coal operations,” senior vice-president of global coal operations David Webb said.
“The implementation of EMS standards is our proactive approach to manage environmental impacts with rigor and continuous improvement.”
Cliffs has coal as well as iron ore operations in North America and iron ore holdings in Western Australia. It also has a chromite project in the feasibility phase in Ontario, Canada.
