The letter says coal is the world’s fastest growing major fuel and is “expected to replace oil as the world’s largest energy source as early as this year.”
Titled "On the contrary, Mayor Bloomberg, coal is the world's fastest growing fuel," the letter highlights coal's growth, technological advancements, emissions reductions and international affordability.
“On behalf of the billions of people in the world who benefit from coal-fuelled electricity, we invite you to learn more about clean coal solutions,” it reads.
The letter follows Bloomberg’s most recent attack on coal at the Advanced Research Projects Agency Energy Innovation Summit in Washington DC on February 27.
“Even though the coal industry doesn’t totally know it yet or is ready to admit it, its day is done,” Bloomberg said.
“Here in the US, I’m happy to say, the king is dead. Coal is a dead man walking.”
Coal is still the leading supplier of electricity in the US.
It accounted for 37.4% of the nation's electricity last year, according to US Energy Information Administration statistics.
