According to local news station WAJR, the union will head to Fairmont, Marion County, on July 9, where its members and supporters will once more speak up in its fight against Patriot Coal, Arch Coal and Peabody Energy.
“There are a lot of folks who work at the Federal Two mine, which is a Patriot mine, and a lot more retirees from that mine who worked for Peabody," UMWA spokesman Phil Smith told the outlet.
“As we've had with every rally, there will be a lot of folks coming in on buses.”
While Smith said the details of the event were still being planned, the union was considering the Fairmont State football stadium as a host venue.
He said the state of West Virginia, the nation’s second largest coal producer, was at the heart of its struggle as so many of its impacted miners were residents and would be affected by the outcome of Patriot’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy hearing.
“It's not just people who are employed in the coal industry who are paying attention and coming to these rallies,” Smith said.
“Other labor unions and other ordinary people are getting involved because they see if Peabody and Arch can get away with this scheme, then anybody can.”
The UMWA held its last West Virginia rally in Charleston in April. That event attracted an estimated 7000 who marched from the Charleston Civic Center to Laidley Tower outside the Patriot Coal offices.
The UMWA did not respond by press time to an ILN request for confirmation of the rally.
