According to The Associated Press, 53-year-old Albert P Brunner died after his vehicle hit the side of the train at a tracks crossing.

The incident occurred near Twin Lakes and was reported by a passing motorist at about 12.45am local time on July 14.

Kootenai County sheriff Ben Wolfinger said the man’s Mitsubishi struck a crossing gate that was down and then hit a train car that was 17 cars from the front. Brunner died at the scene.

BNSF spokesman Gus Melonas told the AP the train had four locomotives and 125 empty coal cars traveling east from Washington state to the Powder River Basin.

He said the gates at the crossing were working properly.
