The MSHA said the accident occurred at 5.45pm Wednesday at Newtown Energy's Peerless Rachel Mine, operated by Patriot Coal, The State Journal reports.

A roof bolter hurt in the collapse was taken to the surface but died from his injuries, said MSHA spokeswoman Amy Louviere.

MSHA District 4 personnel responded upon notification, issuing a closure order and starting an investigation.

According to the MSHA website, it is the first fatality at a mine in West Virginia since governor Earl Ray Tomblin ordered a safety stand down last month.

It is the seventh US coal mine death this year and the fifth in West Virginia.
