BLM putting WY coal on the market

THE Wyoming Bureau of Land Management has confirmed it will sell a 1253-acre coal tract near Gillette in a forthcoming lease sale.

Staff Reporter

The property, known as Hay Creek II, contains about 167 million tons of mineable coal and neighbors Kiewit Mining’s Buckskin operation in Campbell County.

The sale is a response to a lease application by Kiewit made in 2006. If it were to win the block it would extend the life of Buckskin by about a decade.

The BLM has not yet set a date for the lease sale.

The Department of the Interior and BLM issued a record of decision for the final environmental impact statement of Hay Creek II late last week.

The report is available for viewing at the BLM website as well as at the agency’s Cheyenne and Casper offices.
