Company coal operations vice-president James Mullins said the decision to shut the Dominion Coal subsidiary’s No. 36 mine was made due to a “significant downturn” in the market.
The Buchanan County operation is the only one impacted, he said; the four remaining Dominion Coal mines will remain operating.
“This decision was very difficult and we have worked hard to reduce costs in every aspect of our coal operations," Mullins told the Associated Press.
“We believe this focus will help us meet the tough economic challenges we face this year.”
SunCoke Energy is based in Lisle, Illinois. It has facilities in Illinois, Indiana and Ohio in addition to Virginia.
