In a US Securities and Exchange Commission filing released Wednesday, the producer said the order from the US Mine Safety and Health Administration was issued to its northern West Virginia longwall complex on May 2.
“During an examination of the ventilation system of the Federal No. 2 mine, an MSHA representative detected an accumulation of excess methane in a worked-out gob region of the mine where employees do not work or travel,” officials said, adding that regulators also detected an improper reversal of airflow at an evaluation point.
“The company took appropriate actions to alleviate the conditions, and normal mining operations resumed shortly afterward.”
No injuries resulted from the cited conditions.
The producer said that it took issue with the order and would take action in response.
‘The company disputes that the conditions constitute an imminent danger as set forth under [federal regulation] Section 107(a) and intends to vigorously contest the issuance of the order,” officials said.
No further comment was released by the company.
