SEW-Eurodrive introduces Compact gear units

Staff Reporter

SEW-Eurodrive says its new Compact series of gear units are ideal for for heavy-duty medium torque applications. Designed for a 6-60 kNm torque range, the Compact series "fills the gap between gear motors and small gear units, and heavy-duty M Series helical and Quatro Series planetary gear units", according to the manufacturer.

"SEW-Eurodrive Compact is a modular gear unit series designed for continuous reliable cost- effective operation in all mid-range torque process operations," the company said. Typical applications included conveying systems and mixing. Product configuration incorporates helical and bevel helical gear units with solid or hollow output shafts for horizontal, vertical or upright mounting — a flexible package available in two or three stages with ratios from 7.1:1 to 112:1 as standard and all shaft positions.

"These features and a complete range of modular accessories provide the basis for customisation (to suit the) customer's requirement in a timely cost-effective manner," SEW-Eurodrive said.

The company said the new product range had resulted from customer feedback which suggested a gear unit range for smaller torque capacities which its successful M Series heavy-duty range, was needed.

"For over 50 years SEW-Eurodrive has been at the forefront of power transmission. Its world class research and development facility has provided the many technical and manufacturing advances the company is well known for," the company said.

"Using this capability SEW-EURODRIVE Compact embodies significant advances in gear technology, from selection and control of purity of materials, to the optimisation of tooth contact according to the prescribed operating conditions. In particular, as a result of the company's own research into heat generation within the gear mechanism, SEW-Eurodrive Compact has excellent thermal efficiency, a factor visible even in the gear casing design which incorporates a ‘wave' surface to enhance cooling properties.

"In addition, the sound levels of SEW-EURODRIVE Compact in operation are considerably lower (up to 4dB) than conventional expectations, an important operational and environmental improvement."

Similar to its M series range, SEW-Eurodrive has adopted a modular design approach with the Compact line. It said a key feature for the customer was their ability to use the same gear housing for vertical, horizontal or upright applications with all normal shaft positions with either a solid or hollow output shaft.
