The position:

The role of Research Scientist Staff in CSIRO is to conduct innovative research leading to scientific achievements that are aligned with CSIRO's strategies. You may be engaged in scientific activity ranging from fundamental research to the investigation of specific industry or community problems. You will have the opportunity to build and maintain networks, play a lead role in securing project funds, provide scientific leadership and pursue new ideas and approaches that create new concepts. You may be involved in leading research projects or undertaking work that has impact on the development of scientific or technical knowledge.

CSIRO Energy currently has an opportunity for an experienced Rock Mechanics Engineer / Mining Engineer. The successful candidate will be a key member of the Mine Safety and Environmental Group which has been actively engaged with Australian mining industry on various aspects in mining geomechanics, ground control, mine safety, and mine site environment.

The key requirement for the role is significant experience in the Australian mining industry (preferably underground coal), as the incumbent will be expected to help build on, expand and strengthen our existing engagement with the industry. You will also have strong knowledge of geotechnical monitoring and numerical modelling, along with the ability to managing large research projects related to mining engineering.

Specifically you will:

  • incorporate novel approaches to scientific investigations by adapting and/or developing original concepts and ideas for new, existing and further research;
  • interface with mining industry and enhance engagement;
  • integrate the group’s unique capabilities such as geomechanics, micro-seismic and numerical modelling;
  • conduct research as requested in areas of coal mining geomechanics and gas management;
  • initiate major research projects with mining industry that significantly increase the impact of our current research;
  • communicate well, collaborate widely and work effectively as a team member &/or leader of a multi-disciplinary research team;
  • produce high quality scientific and/or engineering papers suitable for publication in quality journals and for presentation at national and international conferences;
  • lead research projects of significant size and provide guidance in the execution of projects undertaken by junior team colleagues, including the negotiation of resource requirements;
  • lead, coach and supervise staff to ensure experiments are established in accordance with research design, within agreed timelines and budget;
  • adhere to the spirit and practice of CSIRO’s Values, Health, Safety and Environment plans and policies, Diversity initiatives and Zero Harm goals.

Salary: AU $106K to AU $124K plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will hold a doctorate and/or have equivalent research experience in a relevant discipline area, such as Mining Engineering, Rock Mechanics, Mine Gas Control.

You will also have strong communication skills and a history of professional behaviours, plus:

  • a significant record of quality publications as primary author in high impact, peer reviewed journals;
  • practical experience in mining operations, preferably in Australian underground coal mines, with a deep knowledge in Mining Engineering, Rock Mechanics, and Mine Gas Control;
  • sound knowledge in geotechnical monitoring (including micro-seismic monitoring) and numerical modelling;
  • skills and experience in successfully initiating and effectively managing large research projects related to mining engineering;
  • the ability to work effectively as a member or leader of a multi-disciplinary, regionally dispersed research team, and carry out independent individual research, to achieve organisational goals;
  • a significant record of science innovation and creativity plus the ability to apply well developed research skills to scientific investigations.
