The company’s Apogee surface mine in Logan County received the Surface Mine Reclamation Award as well as the Turkey and Wildlife Habitat Award from the West Virginia Coal Association.
And its Hill Fork operation in the Corridor G complex also earned the Surface Mine
Reclamation Award from the WVCA.
Another Corridor G complex mine, Westridge Surface, was bestowed the Habitat Award by Ducks Unlimited.
“In these projects, as part of our detailed reclamation plans, we developed food and water sources to encourage turkeys, deer, ducks and other native populations to inhabit the reclaimed areas,” chief operating officer Bennett Hatfield said.
“We are pleased to once again be recognized for doing the right things in our communities.”
Patriot Coal has 13 active mining complexes, which include with surface and underground mines, in Appalachia as well as the Illinois Basin Region. In all, the producer controls about 1.9 billion tons of proven and probable reserves.
