The deceased miner was one of 11 trapped in Guizhou province’s Xinsheng coal mine which was flooded on Thursday.
Official Chinese press agency Xinhua said the flooding was thought to have been triggered by a blast in a neighboring mine.
Authorities stated that as the rescue mission entered its third day, two spaces within the mine remained above the water level and might still serve as refuge for any survivors.
Rescuers are racing to reach the 10 remaining miners, pumping water out at 90 cubic meters per hour.
According to Xinhua, there were 23 miners underground when the flood occurred and only 12 were able to escape on their own.
