About $1 million of the charge will be a non-cash accrual.
“Discussions with the United Mineworkers of America Local 1656 were collaborative,” Cardinal River operations general manager Mark Brown said.
“We are very pleased to have a new five-year agreement.”
Teck’s Cardinal River complex includes the Luscar and Cheviot truck-and-shovel mines which produce mostly metallurgical coal with an annual capacity of 2 million tons per annum.
Cardinal River is located near Alberta’s Jasper National Park and the historic town site of Mountain Park.
At 2011 production rates, Teck estimates a mine life of 28 years for the site.
