The accident occurred Thursday night at Zhangye Hongneng Coal Industry’s Huacaotan mine, still under construction in the city of Zhangye.

As of Saturday, rescue workers reportedly were able to pump out enough water to retrieve the 10th and final body from the shaft.

According to official state media outlet Xinhua, the shaft was inundated by water as deep as dozens of meters.

The news follows quickly on two Chinese coal mine gas blast disasters which killed 59 men in the last two weeks.

Authorities have since announced that a five-month crackdown has resulted in the closing of 754 illegal mines in northern China.
