The coupling control solution could serve a range of controlled fill couplings said i.Power Solutions marketing manager, Tim Haight, and was designed for use in Explosion Risk Zone 1.

Installation or adjustment of Explosion Risk Zone 1 coupling control and face monitoring is typically limited by difficulties in integrating with existing OEM propriety hardware and software. In addition, face communications and gas monitoring systems are typically all separate systems with their own cables and enclosures.

Utilising i.Power Solutions' Link-2 web browser interface and database (which is totally user configurable) and the Baldwin and Francis IS PLC (EEx ia), the new Link- 2 Face Controller enables operators to either replace or fully integrate with the OEM solution to give greater functionality and the ability to control and manage data and equipment from a PC environment locally or anywhere on the network.

i.Power say the advantages include being able to operate the AFC at creep/inspection speed within the designated capability of the coupling. In addition the IS PLC will provide real time chain tensioning thus reducing pan wear and increasing the chain life.

A more detailed article on the system will appear in the June 2003 edition of Australia's Longwalls.
