Fortescue Metals Group is to distribute essential supplies to communities with the help of Woollahra, SureKleen, Action Industrial Catering and Sodexo.

As part of FMG's mercy mission, 29 pallets of food and critical hygiene products such as flour, tinned meat, rice, soap, hand sanitiser and disinfectants will go to communities in Port Hedland, Karratha and Roebourne.

FMG CEO Elizabeth Gaines said with the risks of COVID-19 to regional and remote Aboriginal communities heightened it was vital these communities remain safe and resilient.

She said the critical items would help empower Aboriginal communities to take the necessary steps to prevent an outbreak of COVID-19.

Gaines said the company was also proactively working to ensure its Aboriginal suppliers are part of the ongoing procurement strategy so they can secure supplies and services needed to contain the spread of COVID-19.

BHP is also doing its bit by providing people, resources, financial support and leveraged contractors to educate communities on the COVID-19 risks and help people return to country, as part of the Return to Country program in partnership with the Shire of East Pilbara, Western Desert Lands Aboriginal Corporation, Kanyirrinpa Jukurrpa, Puntukurnu Aboriginal Medical Service, EPIS, WA Police, Department of Communities and other service providers.

It has also teamed with East Pilbara Independence Support to offer indigenous people in need of self-isolation four-bedroom homes, as part of a $50 million vital resources fund.
