The Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported that the 19-year old was trapped by the legs for about an hour after being pinned by a two-tonne slab of coal.

He underwent surgery for two broken legs last week.

The Queensland Mining Council told the ABC that the coal mining industry is continuing to improve safety standards. QMC chief executive Michael Pinnock said state-wide trends show a drop in injuries in the industry in the past five years.
