NSW Government runs second workshop

The NSW Government ran its second Small Mine Safety Workshop in Wollongong last week.

Staff Reporter

Minister for Mineral Resources Eddie Obeid said the workshop was part of a series of forums being held in regional areas as part of the State Government’s small mine safety campaign.

"This two day workshop has attracted participants from 22 participants from 19 operations from the south east of the state from as far as Tumbarumba and Eden in the south, to Glenorie in the northern metropolitan area," Obeid said.

A second workshop is scheduled for Wollongong for December 6.

Obeid said workshops such as these helped make the industry safer and helped mine workers better understand changes to mine safety laws, which came into force in September 2000.

"All mines in NSW are now covered by these new laws – they also include contractors and subcontractors working in small mines and quarries," Obeid said.

"With more than 800 small mines in New South Wales, these workshops build on the NSW Government’s $13.9 million commitment to better mine safety," he said.
