Coronado has restructured the COO role into two positions in line with its operating divisions after Jim Campbell resigned as president and COO.
US-based Jeff Bitzer has been appointed as COO of US while Thompson, located in Australia, has been appointed as COO, Australia.
The Curragh mine is Coronado Australia's major asset.
Thompson joins Coronado from CIMIC Group where he had been managing director and CEO of Thiess since 2017.
In addition to these accountabilities, in the role of mining and mineral processing executive, Thomson was responsible for leading CIMIC Group's operating company Sedgman.
Coronado CEO Gerry Spindler said Campbell would stay on for an interim period to smooth the transition process.
"Our two new COOs are extremely capable, with significant operating experience across all facets of our business," he said.
"Jeff Bitzer has been with Coronado for eight years and has played a leading role in optimising the performance of our US operations.
"I would also like to welcome Douglas Thompson to the company. He brings a wealth of experience in mining and processing operations and is very familiar with Curragh from his time with Thiess."
