The state DEP issued the mine permit for the company’s E Mine, which will extract from the Upper Freeport coal seam. The mine is expected to produce 18.5 million tons of coal over the next 6.5 years.
The Charleston Gazette reported the permit generated controversy within the community and the DEP because of the potential for acid mine drainage.
The DEP permit requires Mettiki to limit "acid mine drainage production and treatment" to 17 years. Mettiki will pump hydrated lime into those mine pools to neutralize acid draining, The Charleston Gazette said.
