Currently the chief development officer of Rio’s Coal Development Group, Harvey has 17 years of experience in coal and iron ore marketing roles and eight years in business development roles.

The Newcastle port operator said he consequently had the experience and knowledge base required to handle complex infrastructure issues.

“PWCS is one of Australia’s most important infrastructure assets, enabling the Hunter Valley to export 91.4 million tonnes of coal in 2008,” Harvey said.

“Maintaining high standards of corporate governance and ensuring that PWCS continues to service the needs of its shareholders and the coal producers in the Hunter are clear priorities.”

He said he was looking forward to working towards finalising the coal industry’s long-term export agreement for the Hunter Valley coal chain, which will provide investment and export certainty underpinned by contractual arrangements.

PWCS chairman Professor Eileen Doyle announced her retirement last week after 11 years at the helm.
