The US Mine Safety and Health Administration told ILN the worker, Richard L Young, 37, was working at Apogee Coal’s Guyan mine when he was pinned and crushed under the counterweight on the rear of a Caterpillar 992G loader.

The accident occurred at about 8.15pm Saturday evening. MSHA immediately issued a 103(j) order to the Logan County surface operation and has since launched an investigation.

The worker’s death is the fourth in the US in 2011 and the second in West Virginia.
