Austrade identified specific interests of the coal mining companies in each country, including:

  • Underground climate-control systems;
  • Underground communication systems;
  • Improved drilling technologies, especially directional drilling and navigation capabilities;
  • CO and CO2 detection and monitoring (both for central and personal applications);
  • Coal washing and ash management and processing, and waste-water reclamation;
  • Personnel training including efficient and safe mining practices – motivational training;
  • Personnel management, which includes worker tracking systems, work cycle management and payroll.

Austrade said the Russian, Ukrainian and Polish coal industries needed to invest in new technology to lift productivity as cost pressures intensify.

The tour is pitched at Australian businesses involved in underground mining contracting, mine safety, mining equipment maintenance and repair services, engineering and consulting, project management, and environmental services.

The application deadline for Austrade’s European Coal Mission is January 25.

Various packages are available that also allow businesses to tour just one of the countries with all trips including accommodation, transportation and business meetings.

One-on-one appointments with the heads of Russian, Ukrainian and Polish mining companies are also on offer.

Russia is second in terms of world coal reserves while Ukraine is sixth and Poland is in eighth place.

All three countries are major European coal producers and the Polish government has a $US90 million budget for coal industry development this financial year.
