Discovery Holiday Parks is adapting its business model by expanding its exposure to the mining sector as part of the company’s long-term growth.

The company has settled a property in Emerald, Central Queensland for $A15 million following recent resource sector acquisitions in Mt Isa and Cloncurry.

The land is additional to the company’s existing 30 holiday parks around the country.

Discovery Holiday Parks chief executive Grant Wilckens said the tourism sector was slowing and the company expected to profit by diversifying its service.

“Companies in the mining industry require reliable, full-service worker accommodation and we’re in a position to meet this demand,” Wickens said.

“Traditionally, tourism has accounted for a majority of our revenue but by diversifying our offering in this way we can ensure continued business growth amidst a slowing tourism sector.”

The existing Emerald Coalfields Lodge, rebranded as Discovery Parks-Emerald is located about 270km west of Rockhampton and caters specifically to the surrounding mining community.

The facility consists of 194 rooms, an 80+ seat capacity restaurant, a 120-bay car park, gymnasium and laundry.
