The southbound lanes opened yesterday at 2pm, while the northbound lanes were due to open this morning.

The project has taken three-and-a-half years to complete.

It required the relocation of more than 5 million tonnes of earth which, according to Infrastructure and Transport Minister Anthony Albanese, is enough soil to fill 2000 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

“This progress is even more remarkable when you consider the fact that since the start of construction the region has received 4.5m of rainfall and experienced three major floods,” Albanese said.

Surfacing the 12km section of road required 160,000 tonnes of asphalt and 6000t of concrete.

The project team will now focus on completing the Mary Valley link road, the realignment of Traveston Road and the construction of the Traveston interchange.

The Bruce Highway project is funded by the federal and Queensland governments.
