Aurizon smashes haulage record

RAIL giant Aurizon has broken coal haulage records, surpassing the previous record set four years...

The company formerly known as QR National has moved 187.38 million tonnes of coal through its Central Queensland Coal Network since the start of the financial year.

Aurizon surpassed the 2009-2010 record by 20,000t with a whole month of the financial year to spare.

Coal was hauled across more than 2500km of track connecting the Moura, Blackwater, Goonyella and Newlands mines.

The staggering figures come as Central Queensland mines push to export as much coal as possible to offset collapsing world prices.

For Aurizon, it is a sign that its effort to speed up its lines is paying off, having dramatically reduced the number of areas where trains must slow down, across the network.

Aurizon executive vice-president Alex Kummant told The Daily Mercury that in a year when the rail network was struck by "significant weather events", the company was proud to break the record.

"The record volumes, achieved in less than 11 months, reflect the company's ongoing transformation across all parts of the business," he said.
