The National Union of Mineworkers started strike action on Tuesday in relation to annual wage negotiations.
Operations at the colliery have ceased and CoAL says the no-work no-pay rule will be applied in relation to this strike.
The NUM was awarded a certificate to commence legal strike action, providing 48 hours’ notice was given to the company.
The company countered through a Section 150 application to the Council of Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration to facilitate negotiations and avoid strike action.
The negotiations were unsuccessful.
Workers rejected the company’s proposed fair wage and benefit offer that amounted to 22% pay rise.
This news adds to fears that industrial unrest that began in the country’s platinum mines is spreading to other mining areas.
Last month these strikes turned deadly at Lonmin’s platinum mine Marikana.
Mooiplaats directly employs 368 people and 176 of them are NUM members.
The operation produces 6000 tonnes of run-of-mine coal per day.
