The simulation will demonstrate the expert skills delivered by the local site Mines Rescue team. It will also showcase how other local emergency response functions coordinate their efforts together to provide assistance in the event of a serious incident.

Mines Rescue regional manager David Connell, who is an internationally renowned emergency response expert and provided assistance at the Beaconsfield mine incident, said the demonstration on Saturday would simulate a real-life mine emergency situation.

“Our local Hunter Valley Mines Rescue team will then arrive at the site and provide assistance to stabilise the situation and assist the casualty,” he said.

“The local ambulance will then arrive with paramedics, followed by the landing of the Westpac rescue helicopter. This demonstration will show how the collective emergency response services work closely together to protect our mine workers.”

Peabody’s Wambo team has volunteered time to demonstrate to the community the expert skills required in the event of a mine emergency. This team has also won the last six consecutive Hunter Valley Mines Rescue competitions.

Wambo team captain Matt Bailey said: “We are really happy to be involved in the simulation. It’s a great way to demonstrate to the community the quality of the emergency response skills that exist in the mining industry.”

Connell and Beaconsfield mine survivor, Brant Webb, will be providing a running commentary throughout the simulation, explaining the actions each response team are taking and how the functions work together.
