The hearings are being held in Washington DC, Atlanta, Denver and Pittsburgh.
They are designed to give interested parties the opportunity to comment on the proposed rule before it takes effect.
The Clean Power Plan seeks to cut carbon pollution from power plants, with the EPA predicting that when the plan is implemented in 2030, carbon emissions from these sources will be 30% below 2005 levels.
It says the proposal will protect public health, move the US towards a cleaner environment and fight climate change while supplying the country with reliable and affordable power.
The coal industry says it is a US government attempt to kill off the nation’s coal mining sector.
In Atlanta, Denver and Washington DC the hearings started yesterday and continue today.
The Pittsburgh hearings are to be held on July 31 and August 1.
