Leighton has been operating the mine since May 2004 when it signed an initial three-year contract. The company said a further $125 million, three-year extension was signed in July last year.

The new contract includes the removal of overburden, the loading and transportation of coal from the mine to the port, and maintenance of the mine’s haul road. Leighton built the haul road under a separate contract in 2004.

Leighton has secured more than $US1 billion in new mining work in Indonesia over the past 12 months and has identified further opportunities in the region.

Shares were trading down 45c at $49.50 on the ASX this morning.
