The courses will be held in five locations, including Morgantown, West Virginia (July 30); Norton, Virginia (August 21); Pikeville, Kentucky (August 22); Charleston, West Virginia (September 19); and Mullens, West Virginia (September 20). Each will begin with a 7.30am registration and wrap up at 5pm.

“Multiple-seam interactions are major ground control hazards in many US underground coal mines,” said NIOSH organisers.

“Mine planners can use this information to adjust the roof support, pillar design or mine layout to minimise the hazard.”

Included in each workshop are case studies in multiple-seam mining as well as a review of the various types of interactions observed with multiple seams. NIOSH’s ARMPS and ALPS will also be discussed, as well as hands-on training of the AMSS system.

In the afternoon session of each event, multiple-seam analysis with LaModel will be under review, including the 2D and 3D LaModels, stability mapping and hands-on training with it.

Organisers for the agency remind potential students that laptops will be utilised as part of the workshop, and while a few will be available for use it encourages students to bring their own. For more information on workshop locations or to register, e-mail dopfer@cdc.gov or visit the NIOSH website.
