While the identity of the producer was not disclosed, ACT president Steve Barrett said the system would be placed in the first mine in May and in the second later this year. A total of 53 nodes will be installed.

He said both operations had rapid expansions planned in coming years and the customer was seeking safety enhancements and productivity gains.

"We’re delighted that ActiveMine will become a key tool for our new customer in fulfilling its commitments to employee safety and business productivity,” Barrett said.

“We look forward to helping customers to safeguard employees and get the most out of their mines.”

The two systems will be the first seen in the state’s mines. Kentucky ranks third in the US for total output.

Barrett also said the deployment of the ActiveMine device was subject to federal approval of its wireless Wi-Fi telephones by the US Mine Safety and Health Administration. However, he noted, that green light was expected soon.
