Christopher Qualls, 30, of Vincennes, was killed Tuesday at a Black Beauty Underground Inc. mine, said Tim Crouse, acting deputy commissioner of the Indiana Department of Labor.

This is the first fatality in an Indiana mine this year, and State and federal authorities were investigating the death.

Qualls was found within minutes of the accident but resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful according to Vic Svec, a company spokesman.

Qualls had only worked for Black Beauty since October 2003, but had previous experience with underground mines, Svec said.
