"The benefits from this $A11.5 million investment speak for themselves, saving the station approximately $A2 million every year and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 92,000 tonnes annually," said Queensland minister for energy John Mickel.

"This is equivalent to taking 21,000 cars off Queensland's roads or planting more than 360,000 trees. This is an important achievement from the government's investment package, putting us on track to meet the future needs of the power station, the future needs of the Queensland energy customers and the future needs of the economy."

The water treatment plant is expected to increase power station efficiency by almost 1%, with the innovative technology being supplied by Veolia Water Systems Australia, which was responsible for the plant's design and construction.

"With backing from the Queensland Government, Stanwell will continue to enhance the performance of our existing operations to promote sustainable development," said Stanwell chief executive Ross Rolfe.

"We are committed to implementing engineering solutions that reflect ingenuity, creativity, and innovation – these are the hallmarks of a world class business."
