Mastermyne will next week hold a number of information sessions in Greymouth and Huntly to “collate interest”, Mastermyne’s Tony Caruso told New Zealand Press.

Caruso said NZ west coasters' mining reputations made them attractive prospects. “There's quite a few New Zealand boys I've worked with at the Australian pits ... great work ethic,” he said.

Mastermyne’s recruitment drive in New Zealand synchronise neatly with Solid Energy mine Spring Creek’s uncertain future.

The mine only recently restarted operations after lying idle since November 2004 after slow development rates, coal quality issues and the risk of spontaneous combustion related to high gas levels closed the mine down.

While the mine has resumed production – under a trial six-month mine plan – the mine’s future is in risk if problems re-occur.

Solid Energy has said it is committed to the success of Spring Creek.
