An unnamed company spokesman revealed the negotiations to India’s Economic Times newspaper, which also reported that Vale, Peabody Energy, Xstrata and Anglo American had expressed interest.
The power company reportedly has coal reserves of 2 billion tonnes.
On its website, R-Power says it has a total of 13 power projects, including six new 14,620-megawatt coal-fired plants to be fuelled by mines and supplies from India and overseas.
In March, Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics analysts projected India’s thermal coal imports to ramp up to 80 million tonnes in 2014, compared to an estimated 34Mt last year.
India has plans to double its electricity generation by 2017.
