The second major high performance computing system to be built by the company uses accelerators to implement “hybrid cluster architecture”
More than 30,000 processing cores, each equipped with two Nvidia Tesla graphics processing unit accelerators connected by high-speed InfiniBand interconnection, have been used to make up the system.
The design is the result of years of research aimed at identifying the most efficient solution able to deliver the power needed for proprietary seismic imaging algorithms and reservoir simulation codes.
The resulting HPC system is the largest supercomputer in Europe and one of the largest in the global oil industry, with a total of 3 petaflops and high performance storage of 7.5 petabytes.
In terms of energy efficiency, the system delivers impressive results at 2.8 gigaflops per watt.
The computer will support the core business of the company by allowing faster and more accurate depth data processing.
