Consol loses exports

CONSOL Energy may lose up to four weeks of thermal coal exports from its Maryland terminal.

Staff Reporter

Company external affairs vice-president Tom Hoffman told Reuters operations had been halted after a dip developed in the pier, setting alarms off when loading.

He said repairs are expected to take four weeks, barring bad weather.

Consol exports 6 million tons per annum mainly to Europe from the port, Hoffman told the news service, meaning Consol will have to drop exports by 500,000t this year due to the delay.

The delay comes at a time when demand for coal is high, with buyers looking beyond the coal chain constricted Australian markets and Asian markets - where domestic demand is eating into exports.
