The NLT Digital Messaging solution integrates standard WiFi 802.11 technology into the company's GII Cap Lamp to offer two-way, text-messaging functionality for underground mining operations.
The Messenger allows mine workers to receive and send messages through an easy-to-use interface on the cap lamp.
Workers can send emergency messages from the device, which also offers location-based tracking.
Messages and location information are managed through NLT's Digital Mine software suite. The web-based software allows users to send messages from any connected terminal on the network.
"Messenger offers fantastic safety benefits for coal mining. The ability for workers to send messages back to the surface has huge implications for safety, not only during rescue operations, but during daily operations as well," North America sales director Dave Smith said.
"For the first time workers will be able to send emergency alerts to central control rooms or other networked computers, call for help or simply verify their status."
NLT is moving to secure IS approval for its complete line of products.
