Details of the report show the extent to which natural gas has pushed out coal-fired plants, with total US coal consumption falling from 1 billion tonnes per year in 2008 to just 750 million tonnes by 2012.
The data forms part of the EIA’s coal data browser, which provides an interactive look at the country’s coal production and consumption trends.
While coal consumption continues to fall, the EIA predicst natural gas will have stellar growth over the mid-term.
With natural gas plentiful and at low prices, the total output of coal is expected to plummet ,while natural gas electricity plants rise to 3.1 terra watt hours per day by 2015.
