It is also required to submit a corrective action plan to the state’s environmental protection agency, natural resources department and the US Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement, detailing preventative measures and the safe disposal and treatment of future waste.
Madigan said Macoupin Energy will also pay a civil penalty of $US100,000 to fund two supplemental environmental projects with an additional $US100,000 to the County’s Soil and Water Conservation District to fund a program helping landowners reduce soil erosion and sedimentation and nutrient runoff.
It will also pay $US97,500 to the village of New Haven to upgrade its public water supply infrastructure.
Soil and Water Conservation District executive director Rhonda Koehne said the funding would help implement a variety of best management practices.
“By focusing the funds within the watersheds of our count’s public drinking supply lakes, we will be helping to improve the quality of our drinking water,” she said.
