Uncertainty persists for Adani's Carmichael coal project

Indian mining and energy company Adani insists it may resume work on its massive Carmichael coal project in Queensland, despite reports suggesting indicating no further capital would be spent on the controversial mine this financial year, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

Unconfirmed reports have suggested that Adani management told the investment community in India that any future investments in the Carmichael project would depend on “visibility of revival in global coal prices”

The reports also suggested no further spending would take place before June 30.

Energy giant charged over mine fire

Hazelwood mine operator GDF Suez will face millions of dollars of fines, after it was charged over a fire at its coal mine that burnt for 45 days, according to the Australian Financial Review.

Worksafe Victoria has charged the Hazelwood Power Corporation with 10 workplace safety breaches, in relation to preparedness for the 2014 fire in the Hazelwood open cut coal mine which took 45 days to extinguish.

Iron ore cargoes from Port Hedland slowed by weather

Iron ore shipments from Australia's Port Hedland declined in January after loadings were disrupted by bad weather and bumper volumes were dispatched from the world's top bulk-export terminal the month before, according to the Australian Financial Review.

Total exports fell to 33.78 million tonnes from 37.55Mt in December and 36.77Mt in January 2015, according to port authority data. That's the lowest since June 2014. China-bound cargoes dropped to 28.91Mt from 32.17Mt in December and 30.15Mt a year earlier, said the authority, which revised the figure for Chinese shipments on Thursday after releasing initial data on Wednesday.
