Owned, built and operated by Energy Developments Limited (EDL), the power station is fuelled by waste mine gas from Grasstree, which forms part of Anglo’s Capcoal mining complex in the area.
Acting CEO Neville Sneddon said the development of the power station would also make underground mining at Capcoal safer, with the potentially hazardous gasses from underground removed before mining is carried out.
“It is also worth noting that this is a project that itself has been completed safely. During the 100,000 construction hours worked there were no lost time incidents for employees and contractors alike,” he said.
Sneddon said that Anglo Coal Australia was one of the few companies successfully harvesting coal seam methane in Australia.
“Gas recovery has become an important focus for Anglo Coal Australia and we are now producing close to 8 percent of the Queensland gas market,” said Sneddon.
“This level of production is being achieved from mine gas recovery operations at our Dawson, Moranbah North and Capcoal operations.”
Energy Developments also recently entered an agreement for the development of a new 40MW Coal Mine Methane Power Station at Anglo Coal’s and Mitsui Holdings’ Moranbah North Coal Mine.
Subject to finalisation of contracts and other related matters, construction of this new power station is expected to commence later this year.
