Official news agency Xinhua reported 28 miners were working underground on Tuesday when the accident occurred.

Rescuers attended the state-owned Huisen Liangshuijing Coal Mine in Shaanxi province, and rescued 12 workers, two of whom died later in hospital. A further 16 bodies were later recovered from the mine.
