This figure was reported by Energy Publishing and Platts, while Reuters reported that BHP was offering Japanese steel mills a price of $215/t.

In late July, Macquarie Research noted that spot Australian hard coking coal peaked at $245/t FOB in mid-April after Cyclone Ului shut down the Hay Point Coal Terminal earlier in the month.

The analysts observed there was growing global supply of metallurgical coal.

“The big surprise in met coal supply this year has been the flow of material from Mongolia into China,” Macquarie said at the time.
